چکیده

The high complexity nature of current contemporary software makes team a popular work style in information system development (ISD) projects. ISD is a knowledge intensive process which requires members to exchange and coordinate knowledge resources effectively. However, it is reported that ISD projects often failed because of coordination breakdown and insufficient knowledge exchange resulting from ineffective communication among team members. This highlights the importance of understanding how to enhance those knowledge-oriented teamwork activities. Drawing on this issue, this study aims at exploring the critical role of transactive memory system (TMS) on teamwork processes and performance. Data collected from 236 IS personnel confirmed our hypotheses that having a mature TMS can effectively enhance performance directly, and indirectly through improving communication and coordination process. Lastly, discussions of the results and implications toward practitioners and academia are provided. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd. and IPMA. All rights reserved.

The Influence of Subgroup Dynamics on Knowledge Coordination in Distributed Teams: A Transactive Memory System and Group Faultline Perspective

With the rapid growth of globalization, distributed teams have become increasingly common in organizations. This research investigates the impact of inter-subgroup dynamics on knowledge coordination in distributed teams. To address this research question, we extend and apply theory from two primary sources – Transactive Memory Systems (TMS) theory and the faultline model. The paper uses data co...

An Investigation into the Tools and Techniques within the Pmbok (4th Edition) That Support Transactive Memory Systems

Transactive memory is the process of using other people as external memory aids. Research indicates that transactive memory enhances several functions that improve project performance, such as knowledge transfer, knowledge integration, and knowledge coordination. The PMBOK is a leading text used to train and inform project managers. Surprisingly, a content analysis found that only 2 of 179 tool...

Influence of transactive memory on perceived performance, job satisfaction and identification in anaesthesia teams.

BACKGROUND There is an increasing awareness in the medical community that human factors are involved in effectiveness of anaesthesia teams. Communication and coordination between physicians and nurses seems to play a crucial role in maintaining a good level of performance under time pressure, particularly for anaesthesia teams, who are confronted with uncertainty, rapid changes in the environme...

Slippage in the System: The Effects of Errors in Transactive Memory Behavior on Team Performance

[Excerpt] Although researchers have consistently shown that the implicit coordination provided by transactive memory positively affects team performance, the benefits of transactive memory systems depend heavily on team members’ ability to accurately identify the expertise of their teammates and communicate expertise-specific information with one another. This introduces the opportunity for err...
